Digital Video Camcorders Techniques - Zooms and Pans

When taking video (if you are serious about taking good video) there are little habits that many camcorder operators get into without really noticing.

One is the 'ear' method of filming.

That is "I heard something over there so I will quickly turn the camcorder to it... oooh something is happening over here so i'll turn the camcorder back the other way!"

The problem is that all this is being done while the camcorder is still recording so the result is a dizzying set of images that can be difficult to sit through and watch.

Below is a video of when and how to correctly use zooms and pans with your digital video camcorders:

It's all about the final production and when you or your audience sits down in front of the screen to watch the end result.

You can actually make people feel dizzy or a little 'seasick' if the shots are spinning round from one to another too quickly.

That's not to say "never use pans and zooms", but more to use them in a way that compliments the images and makes for a better end production.

If you have any of your own digital video camcorders techniques like this one it would be great if you could mention it in the comments below.
