Motocross Riding Tips - Cornering Ruts

More motocross riding tips on video!

Australian motocross champion Lee Hogan knows what it takes to go fast on a dirtbike.

Motocross tracks as they get soft, haven't been graded or are heavily used can get rutted out.

Rutted corners can psych out some motocross riders and they become tense and lose speed.

If you get the technique right, ruts can be great fun to rail fast and reduce lap times.

First thing a dirtbike rider should practice is body position. Your body should be on the same angle as the dirtbike, elbows up and leg out in front.

Another key is early preparation.

That is you should complete your braking before you enter the rut and then once you are balanced on your dirtbike you can drive through the corner.

Don't brake into the rut. You will lose momentum and balance and end up either riding out the top or getting stuck in the rut.

Make sure as your dirtbike enters the rut you look ahead and 'ride through the rut'. Don't follow your front wheel too closely.

Another key point to remember is that your leg position is critical. Point your toe and get to a point where you foot skims across the surface.

Start practicing slow and then increase your speed as your technique improves.
