Motocross Riding Tips

Whether racing motocross or trail riding dirtbikes, good control comes from the proper riding position.

Having levers, handlebars and ride height setup to your personal preference can be done before your dirt bike even leaves it's stand.

Modern motocross bikes with excellent front suspension allow riders to control the bike and position themselves with their head over the triple clamp. A technique pioneered by Jeremy McGrath.

Elbows up in the 'attack' position stops your body being thrown off balance if the front wheel is deflected. Keeping your body low, knees bent and head over the triple clamps with your eyes far forward keeps your prepared for upcoming obstacles.

Hi Marshall,

I have certainly heard about the Gary Bailey School and if i wasn't in Australia I would go there myself.

David Bailey was one of the smoothest riders on the track.

Any chance you can get for rider tuition from such an acclaimed coach I'd make the most of it!

Hi, best way to keep track of the gears is basically for your son to count to himself as he goes up or down gears.

If he losses track he can recount when he goes into a first gear corner or from top gear down.

With the clutch, best method is to feed out the clutch not just dump it. Can only dump or quickly engage and disengage the clutch when at speed.

Hope this helps and your son has a great time on dirt bikes

oh and dont forget to grip with your knees. Legs are stronger than arms so it can help reduce arm pump
