Starts
can be the most important part of your whole race. Starting in
sand requires different techniques than that of dirt. Throw in
a concrete launch pad and a slightly different preparation is
required...
More
than likely a permanent motocross track in sand will have a concrete
launch pad. So here's some specific tips to help you on race day:
Groom
the Gate -
As
with any race start it's important to prep your race area. With
a concrete launch pad try and have a helper along with a broom
to sweep the sand off from your start grid.
Burn
Some Rubber -
Heat
the tire by spinning the rear wheel on the spot.
Control
Your Wheelspin -
Too
much wheelspin along with poor body weight positioning will result
in your bike plowing into the sand after the gate. Carefully control
wheelspin with throttle and clutch.
Balance
-
Keep
your weight centered on the bike. Even ease off a touch on the
throttle compared to a hardpack start.
Feed
the Power -
Feed
the clutch out slowly to maintain the engine in the optimum rev
range and avoid wild wheelspin as you enter the sand.
Where
to Look -
Watch
the top of your own gate right in front of you. This will give
you the quickest reaction time and help you maintain balance.
Keep
it Loaded -
Hold
the clutch slightly engaged with the front brake on. This will
give you the quickest reaction time.
Visualise
-
Get
your mind ready. Visualise your perfect start, then go out and
do it.
Practice
-
Practice,
practice, practice...
