Filmmaking Techniques - Fast and Slow Editing

You can seriously effect the look and feel of your movie or video once you get into the editing suite.

This can be described as either fast editing or slow editing.

What it refers to is the length you allow a particular shot to run for before cutting to another camera angle.

An example would be for a relaxing, peaceful scene. This lends itself to long, lingering and sweeping shots.

A manic paced scene is best conveyed by short clips cut together to convey movement, tension and pace.

Here's a video sample of applying these various editing techniques:

This can also be done as you film (an 'in-camera' edit) where you deliberately hold a shot for longer or cut it short based on the subject matter.

As the filmmaker come producer/director come editor you have the power to control the outcome and 'feel' for your movie or video.

Careful fore-thought or pre-production planning (or storyboard) will make this easy once the camera is running.
